There are two types of pearls to choose from. A natural pearl is made in the inside of a select few of bivalve mollusks. A pearl is created as a response to irritation that the mollusk experiences inside of the shell. Deposits of calcium carbonate are given off by the creature. These deposits are kept together in conchiolin and this compound, when mixed with the calcium carbonate forms mother-of-pearl whose scientific name is nacre.

A natural pearl will be made up completely of nacre and is extremely rare. A pearl takes around eight months to be created and most of the mollusk that make them are off of the coast of Australia. In order to prove that a pearl is natural x-ray technology must be used.

The rarity of a natural pearl makes it a very precious gem. This of course means that a natural pearl is going to be very expensive. A cultured pearl will cost less and is easier to come by. There are a number of different types of cultured pearls to choose from.

A black pearl is extremely valuable because they are not made often. The culturing process of black pearls works slower so there are fewer pearls made. A cultured pearl is one that is preformed. A bead is put inside of a mollusk and layers of nacre are given off and form around the inserted bead. The bead typically needs about six months, sometimes more, to cover the implant and make a cultured pearl.

Cultured pearls and natural pearls are hard to tell apart. In fact, the difference can only be spotted when the pearl is x-rayed. With that in mind, confidently buy a pearl for less without its beauty being compromised.
