Lip Piercing

Lip modifications have been tied to certain African tribes. They would start out with a simple piercing and enlarge it to the point of being able to hold a small dish. It is said that the size of the plate inserted in the lip had to do with social and economic importance within the tribe. Modern day lip piercing does not necessarily mean the lip but any of the surrounding area of the mouth. There are many types of lip piercings done today. The lip piercings are named by their location around the mouth.

A lip ring is a lower lip piercing with a ring that encircles your bottom lip. Specific placement can be on either side or in the middle. Another kind of lip piercing is the labret piercing. This is a stud that is generally in the middle of the mouth directly above the chin. They can be off center but usually are not. A vertical labret is a variation of this. In a vertical labret lip, piercing a ring is worn to be visible both below the lip and in between the lips.

A Madonna lip piercing is a beauty mark piercing. It is made on the upper lip below the edge of the nose, where Madonna’s famous beauty mark lies. There are other versions of beauty mark lip piercings, the name just depends on whose beauty mark you are trying to copy.

Some terms used for specific multiple piercings would be angel bites, snakebites, spider bites, and venom bites. An angel bite is having two lip piercings on the upper lip on opposite sides of the mouth. Snakebites are when there are two low lip piercings on the opposite sides of the mouth. A spider bite is three lower lip piercings, two on opposite sides of the low lip and a labret in the middle. Venom bites are two lower lip piercings that are side by side but can be on either side of the mouth.

A lip piercing can be more dangerous than other body piercings because the rings and studs can damage the teeth and gums. A lip piercing can become infected more easily than other body piercings can. It is recommended that you should limit any kind of mouth contact during the healing time that can take from two to six months. All general body piercing rules and cleaning applies to lip rings.
