Belly Button Rings

Belly button piercing does not appear to have many historic references as other body piercings do. Some have said that the ancient Egyptian royals had worn gold belly button rings. There is no proof if this is true however. Belly button rings first began in the 1960's when it is said that a famed runway model appeared to have a belly button ring. Since there is no absolute proof it is said that the craze for them began in the early 1990's when Alicia Silverstone was shown wearing a belly button ring in the Aerosmith video "Cryin". Since then many celebrities have been spotted wearing various forms of belly button rings.

Piercing belly buttons are much more common among women than men. Belly button rings can range in styles from curved barbells to sparkling dangles. There are diamond belly button rings available as well as 14k gold ones. Although there are pregnancy belly button rings available for all the die hard belly button pierced people, there are something you need to watch out for. While the pregnancy belly button rings are considerably longer and plastic there is still a risk of tearing due to the stretching body. The tearing needs to be cared for as an open wound and can lead to infection. Another alternative could be a fake belly button ring. You will have the look and sparkle of the real thing without the hole. A belly chain is another form of belly button ring. It is usually a thin chain that wraps around the waist and is attached to the belly button. There are often diamonds or gems that dangle from the chain. With all of the styles available there is surely one out there to suit everyone’s needs.

As with any body piercing, there is cleaning, care, and maintenance required with having a belly button ring. The piercing can look healed but complete healing time can be from six months to one year. Wash the piercing once a day with antibacterial soap and soak it in a saline solution daily. It is not a good idea to use alcohol on the piercing because it can dry out the skin and cause irritation. It is best to wear loose clothing and not to touch and play with the belly button ring while it is healing. It has been said that taking vitamin C and zinc will help speed up the healing process.
